The Chinese  furniture, in principle, can be divided into five categories by their different functions: bed & couch 床榻類, desk & table 桌案類, chair & stool 椅凳類, cabinet 櫃架類, and miscellaneous category 雜項類.

Bed & Couch 床榻類

Classic Chinese bed and couch furnitures include platform, day bed, canopy bed.  Day bed also have two types. One is called Luohan bed 羅漢床, the other is called chaise couch 貴妃榻. Chinese traditional canopy beds (架子床) have three types: four-post canopy bed, six-post canopy bed and alcove canopy bed (拔步床)

Chinese seating furniture is perhaps the most sculptural of Chinese furniture forms. The earliest Chinese chair emerged during the Tang (618-907AD) dynasties. Over centuries of gradual refinement, Chinese chairs developed into to the mature classical patterns that are universally admired today. The traditional Chinese seating furniture generally fits into three major categories: chair, stool and throne. Cabinet 櫃架類

Chinese cabinet style furniture first emerged in Han Dynasty. Prior to this, only box and case style furniture was found in archeology. During Song dynasty, the book cabinet appeared in Chinese daily life. Chinese cabinet furniture developed dozens of types during Ming and Qing Dynasty. According to their usage, Chinese classical cabinet furniture can be devided into four major categoies: bedroom cabinet, study cabinet, curio cabinet and kithen cabinet.
